October 15, 2013
By

On Saturday, Oct. 5 canoes hit the water at 9 a.m. near Raccoon Bridge, now known as the Jeremy Gullett Memorial Bridge, on the Little Sandy River. They raced 6.14 miles to the Little Sandy Ramp near the mouth of the Ohio River.

The winning team of Aaron Collier and Graig Adkins, of South Shore, finished the race in one hour and 15 minutes. Second place went to Phillip Abbott and Ed Abbott, of Catlettsburg. Third place was awarded to Tim Clay and Jim White, of Plain City, Ohio. Fourth place went to the husband and wife team of Alan and Anne Parrott, of Franklin Furnace, Ohio.

The awards were given at the 48th Annual Greenup Old Fashion Days. It was a fun day for all the competing teams.

Senator Robin Webb presented Soc Clay and Sam Piatt an award for their combined 100 years of outdoor communication excellence. With this award they were given one of the original t-shirts produced for the opening of the Jenny Wiley Trail.

Both Soc and Sam were active in the opening of the trail. It is not open at this time. The former 180-mile National Recreation Trail fell into disuse as a footpath shortly after being opened more than 30 years ago. They both have supported the reopening of the trail. Both say they will treasure the t-shirt as a blast from the past.

Soc said he would like to see the race become an annual event with all the proceeds going to the Veterans Cemetery Northwest. While the event didn’t have a lot of teams, Soc expressed his hope that it will grow in popularity.
