Baby its cold Outside

By Chris Erwin
As fall slides into winter outdoor activities change as well, some fish are active as long as you are willing to brave the cold but for the most part, many people will switch gears to hunting, bird watching or hiking.
Speaking of hunting the most popular hunting season is upon us. Deer hunting using modern guns began Nov.10. And will run in zone two until the 25th. Zone three and four will run from Nov. 10-19. While zone two and 3 can take either sex, zone four is antlered deer only.
If you get your deer, you need to know how to check it in, here is the way to do it.
All harvested animals must be telechecked through the toll-free, automated phone-in system by midnight on the day the animal is recovered, with the following exceptions and additional restrictions: Bears must be telechecked before the hunter leaves the department check-in station. Deer and elk must be telechecked before removing the hide or head. Harvested animals must be telechecked before being transported out of Kentucky. When you call, you will be asked a short series of questions, including your Social Security number and the code number for the county where you took the animal. You can check multiple animals during the same call. It takes about five minutes each. Entering false information is unlawful. Telecheck by phone – call 800-245-4263 (800-CHK-GAME)

The deer population in Kentucky has continued to grow and harvesting your deer is a lot easier these days than it used to be. Our eastern Kentucky counties all have good numbers of deer, and almost any farm has a population of deer.

Your must have permission to hunt on private land. However, they are public hunting areas if you don’t know someone or want to ask for permission to hunt.

Greenbo State Park has hunt packages for both bow and gun hunts. Daniel Boone National Forest also has public hunting areas. For a full list of public lands check the DFWL website.

Kellby Slone’s buck taken a few years back in the same location photo submitted

This past weekend I did a little four wheeling in an area near Cave Run Lake while in the woods, I ran into Kellby Slone from Floyd County. He was deer hunting with some of his family, on their first-day Slone bagged his deer. It was taken just off route 1274 in Rowan County. Slone told me in years past; he bagged a 10 pointer in the same area. However, this year they were taken the first thing that came their way, so they could spend Thanksgiving with their family.

Thanksgiving is just a few days away so I urge you to be safe while you’re in the woods, wear the required hunter orange and never take a shot until you are sure of your target.

This is the time of the year when we get together to give thanks for all we have, I want to take a minute to say, “thank you” to all our service men for their service, many of them will not be with their families while we cut our turkey and enjoy fellowship with our friends and family. I want them to know we are thinking about them and pray for their safe return.
