This fishing report was compiled for the week of Sept. 17, 2013
Editor’s note: The fishing reports from all the reporting lakes improved this week as water temperatures continue to fall we expect to see improving success, while some anglers may choose to spend time in the woods bow hunting. Cave Run Lake: The lake has remained stable this past week. Some creeks and upper regions of the Licking River have cleared. The lake is only .1 feet over summer pool. The main lake remains clear and stable at 77-79 degrees. Musky: The muskie fishing has been fair to good this week. Baits that saw action were spinnerbaits, crankbaits, jerkbaits (early and late) gliders and swimbaits. An added bait this week is topwater baits. Both prop baits and buzzbaits have caught fish. Largemouth Bass: The bass are starting to school up feeding on shad. As the water cools, a host of patterns will begin to develop. In the upper areas of the Licking River, we have reports of bass hitting spinnerbaits in tree-lines near the channel. Early and late, crankbaits have also had success fishing points and flats. Zara Spook type baits have also caught fish this week. Crappie: In the last few weeks reports of good crappie catches have dried up. However, it’s time for these fish to begin hitting in treetops in the river. Catfish: Catfish reports have been slow this week. As nights cool, we expect to see more reports of good catches using jugs and limb lines.
Grayson Lake: The lake has been stable this week and upper areas of the river have improved. The water temperature has been 78 degrees. Bass: The bass fishing has improved this week. Reports of bass being taken using Carolina rigged worms and on shakey head jigs in the low-light periods continue to come in. We also had a report of fish caught on an A-rig, fishing road-beds while drifting. Crappie: Fair to good, fishing swim jigs around down timber and brush piles. Crappie fishing is improving at night under crappie lights and using live bait. Catfish: Good, fishing live bait from the heads of coves near discharge areas.
Greenbo Lake: Continued to be unchanged this week. The lake has been reporting the highest water temperatures for the last several weeks. It is clear and stable with water temperatures still hitting the 80s, it has forced much of the fishing into the low-light periods. Some topwater action while the water is slick in the hour just after dawn is continuing to improve. Bass: The bass were still being reported in summer patterns, but as the night fishing begins to come to an end we should see better fishing during the day-light hours. Trout: While the trout fishing has slowed, Greenbo will get a stocking of trout in October. Keep watching our report for the day and time. Catfish: Good this week fishing very early and after dark. Fish live bait, chubs, small bluegill and cut bait. Bluegill: We got a few reports of bluegill success fishing crickets, mill-worms and live nightcrawlers.
Ohio River: The Ohio River has been the most improved this week as the water continues to clear. Areas like the Little and Big Sandy Rivers have also improved in color adding to the improved fishing in the river. Largemouth Bass: Small spinnerbaits continue to be the most productive this week fishing points and structure around discharge areas. Crankbaits have also produced fishing these same areas. Below the Dam: Twin tail grubs on 1/4 oz. ball jigs are still the best producers of Sauger and Walleye using slow, bump the bottom retrieves and running a two jig setup. One of the two baits needs to be a little off of the bottom. White Bass: Slow with few reported catches. Bass: We are looking for some new reports on the bass fishing above the dam, if you get on the water help us out! Catfish: The catfish has been active this week with reports of good catches in back water areas along with feeder creeks using live bait.
Yatesville Lake: Hot, fishing the timbered areas of the lake! The temperature continues to improve and so has the fishing. The water has been clear and stable at 78 degrees. Bass: With water temperatures improving this week, the morning lowlight period is the most productive. Spinnerbaits, crankbaits, topwater and jigs all have produced fish. Crappie: Food and unchanged. Fish the edges of flats in channel bends and old fish attractors using 32 oz. white crappie jigs or live bait. We have seen some anglers improving their odds by fishing lowlight periods and at night. Catfish: The catfish have been active this week. We got reports of good catches on both live bait and small spinnerbaits fishing coves with standing timber and just off the bottom in flats using live bait.
