Eastern Kentucky Fishing Report Aug. 1

This fishing report was compiled for the week of  Aug. 1, 2013

Editor’s note: We have had some relief in the heat this week and summer patterns are in full swing. The Ohio River remains muddy with some areas receiving flash flooding. The river is the last to clear. All of our reporting lakes are at summer pool or only slightly above it. Some creeks and a few river heads are reporting stained water, however, most are in good shape. Moving your fishing to the low-light periods or at night is still popular with reporting anglers. If you give it a try this week tell us how did. Your help makes this report more accurate.

Cave Run Lake: Cave Run at press time has returned to .4 feet over summer pool. Most of the lake has good color and remains unchanged this week. Some quick rains have muddied some creek heads but that has had very little impact on the lake or river. Musky: The muskie fishing was unchanged this week as water temperatures remain in the low 80s and more anglers electing to fish at night or the low-light periods where water temperatures fall to levels more conducive to active fish. Spinnerbaits, topwater, and bulldawg-type baits remain productive.  Largemouth Bass: Water levels have been stable this week and the bass fishing has been fair and improving. Productive baits this week have been crankbaits, Senko’s and shakey head jigs. We did have a few reports of Smallmouth being caught in the dam area at night using swim jigs bouncing them down riprap areas. Fish were reported being in about 15 foot of water. White Bass: We are getting no reports of white bass catches. If you happen to catch some white bass on this lake drop us, a line and tell us about it. Crappie: We are continuing to get reports of angler’s night fishing under lights with moderate success. Fish live minnows at 18 to 25 feet near channel areas of the main lake. Catfish: Catfish have been active this week and continue to be producing. Jug fishing and limb-lines both have reported fair to good catches.

Grayson Lake: The lake has remained stable this week with some stained water developing in the creek and upper river areas. The lake is less than a foot over summer pool. The main lake has good color and water temperatures broke the 80 degree mark. Bass: The bass fishing is reported unchanged and slow with some fish being caught on Texas rigged worms fishing points during the low-light periods early and late. We also had reports of some angler’s fishing at night but having little success so far. Crappie: Fair to good, fishing swim jigs around down timber and brush piles. Crappie fishing is improving at night fishing under crappie lights with live bait. Catfish: Good, fishing spawning areas with nightcrawlers, minnows and cut bait on jugs and limb lines.

Greenbo Lake: This lake reported unchanged this week. The lake is clear and stable with water temperatures hitting the 80s, it has forced much of the fishing into the low-light periods and at night. Bass: The bass have been reported in summer patterns. Many anglers are fishing this lake at night with Texas rigged worms and jigs dressed with swim minnows. Trout: Fair, trout are showing up fishing with live bait and small spinners in the heads of coves.  Catfish: Good this week fishing very early and after dark with live bait, chubs, small bluegill and cut bait. Bluegill: We got a few reports of good catches this past week. The moon was full the 23rd of this month and bluegill should still be on the nest. This one may not be as large as the spring spawn.

Ohio River: While the river has returned to near normal levels, it was muddy as of press time. As long as we have flash flooding, it it hard for the river to clear. Largemouth Bass: Active fishing small spinnerbaits and buzz baits in the low-light periods. Below the Dam:  Twin tail grubs on 1/4 oz. ball jigs are still the best producers Sauger and Walleye using a slow bump the bottom retrieves. We also got reports that running a two jig setup has been producing better strikes. One of the two baits needs to be a little off of the bottom. White Bass: are getting active as they begin to chase shad, some reports of schooling fish are starting to show up.  Bass: We are looking for some new reports on the bass fishing above the dam, if you get on the water help us out! Catfish: The catfish have been active this week with reports of good catches in back water areas along with feeder creeks using live bait.

Yatesville Lake: This lake has returned to near normal levels. The main lake is clear with water temperatures climbing into the 80s. Bass: While the topwater action has slowed somewhat we are getting more reports of fish be taken on jigs and crankbaits, and on small spinnerbaits fishing the low-light periods. Crappie: Good, fish the edges of flats in channel bends and old fish attractors using 32 oz. white crappie jigs or live bait. We have seen some anglers improving their odds by fishing low-light periods and at night. Bluegill: The bluegill have spawned for the second time this year and some good catches were reported last week using nightcrawlers and crickets. Look for hard bottom areas in water about 8-10 feet. Catfish: The catfish have really been active this week. We got reports of good catches on both live bait and small spinnerbaits fishing coves with standing timber along with the flats using live bait and fishing just off the bottom.
