Delaying mowing for a couple of weeks will help deer fawns, wild turkeys and small game. Deer fawning peaks in mid-June and the cool, wet spring caused some wild turkeys to lose their first clutch of eggs and they nested again. Newborn fawns lay nearly motionless in tall grass with their mother close by and young turkeys cannot fly for the first few weeks of life. This makes them vulnerable to mowing. If feasible, putting off mowing until the first of July will help reproduction of these species. Photo by James Inman
