Eastern Kentucky Fishing Report

This fishing report was compiled for the week of Jan. 30, 2013

Editor’s note: Winter sure made its appearance this weekend. The fishing reports reflect the very slow reports and limited activity. As we return to warmer temperatures, the fishing reports should rebound as well. If you get out on the water this week, please drop me a line and let me know how you did.

Cave Run Lake: The lake has been dropping this week after all the rain it took the week before. It was dropping at a rate of .8 feet per week. The lake is 2.8 ft. over winter pool. Water temperatures remain at 41 to 43 degrees. Little was reported this week as the cold temperatures and snow restricted most anglers. Musky: Slow; however, some anglers continue to fish gliders, jerkbaits and bulldawg type baits with some success. Smallmouth Bass: no smallmouth reports came in this week. If you get on the water let us know how you did.  Largemouth Bass: Slow, fishermen trying to fish for LM should fish deep areas with slow moving swim baits or vertical jigs, spoons or blade baits.

Grayson Lake: Water levels are falling this week and very little activity was reported. Water temperature is 42 to 44 degrees. Little has changed this week. Bass: Slow use jigs and spinnerbaits. Active bass are spotty. Crappie: Slow, fishing swim jigs around down timber, let the jig fall into the 10 to 12-foot range. Yellow 1/8 jigs have had the best success for the last few weeks. Catfish: We had been getting reports of some catfish being caught below the dam.

Greenbo Lake: The lake is in good shape and the water has cleared for now. Water temperature was 40 to 42 degrees. Some ice was beginning to form, but as temperatures rise this week we don’t look for it to freeze. Bass: The bass fishing is reported to be slow fishing jigs and blade baits. Fish that have been active have been in 15 to 20 feet of water. Best results have been on Sliver-Buddy type baits jigging vertically. Trout: Greenbo was stocked in October and the trout fishing continues to be the bright spot in our fishing reports. There were some good reports this week fishing Berkley’s power bait. Trout has been caught below the dam fishing small spinners and red worms.   Catfish: Slow, fishing very early and mid-day, with live bait, chubs, small bluegill and cut bait.

Ohio River: The river has started to come down this week, but weather has kept many anglers from wetting a line. This should improve soon, and we expect to start getting some catch reports as the week begins to warm. Largemouth Bass: Slow using jigs around rocky areas and secondary points. Below the Dam: With water levels rising, the sauger bite has been slow. Twin tail grubs on ¼ oz. ball jigs are still the best producers. Use slow bump the bottom retrieves. Stripe Bass: We had no reports of stripers this week. If you have success let me know so we can pass it along. Bass: Above the dam has been slow this week. Some fish were reported taken on lipless crankbaits fishing coves that are holding shad. Catfish: We didn’t get any reports from catfish anglers this week.

Yatesville Lake: Lake levels have started to fall as the rains ended. We didn’t receive any fishing reports on this lake this week. Headwaters are still muddy with little activity reported. Temperature is 41 to 43 degrees. Bass: Slow this week. Fish deep-water structure using jigs and vertical jigging baits. A few fish were reported active around fish attractors using jigging spoons.  Crappie: slow. Fish the edges of flats in channel bends and old fish attractors using 32 oz. white crappie jigs or live bait.

  1. Any recent reports at Grayson lake? I’m coming from California to visit my sister and she lives 5 minutes from the lake and I want to do some fishing while I’m there. Any advice on what’s biting and how to rig up would be helpful.
