This fishing report was compiled for the week of Sept. 04, 2013
Editor’s note: This year has been far from a typical season, however, it’s safe to say we are still in the dog days of summer. While water temperatures have vacillated up and down we are still a few weeks away from solid fall patterns. Early and late periods are still the best time to expect good results.
Cave Run Lake: The lake has been stable this past week. Some creeks and upper regions of the Licking River continue to be reported stained to muddy. The lake is .2 feet over summer pool. The main lake remains clear and stable at 79 degrees. Musky: The musky fishing has been fair to good this week. Baits that have seen action are spinnerbaits, crankbaits, gliders and swimbaits. Largemouth Bass: While the size and types of baits may be different, fishing summer patterms in the low-light periods have produced results this week. Baits this week have been crankbaits, Senko’s and shaky-head jigs. White Bass: We are still looking for reports of white bass catches. If you are catching any of these fish, let us know. Crappie: We are continuing to get reports of anglers night fishing under lights, with moderate success, using live minnows in 18 to 25 feet of water near channel areas of the main lake. Catfish: Active this week. Jug fishing and limb lines both have reported fair to good catches.
Grayson Lake: We had some reports this week of good catches of bass fishing the upper region of the lake, which has been muddy but improving. Bass: Little change this week, with some reports of bass being taken using Carolina rigged worms and shaky-head jigs in the low-light periods. Crappie: Fair to good, fishing swim jigs around down timber and brush piles. Crappie fishing is improving at night under crappie lights with live bait. Catfish: Good, fishing spawning areas with nightcrawlers, minnows and cut bait using jugs and limb lines.
Greenbo Lake: Mostly unchanged this week. The lake was reporting the highest water temperatures, which are still hitting the 80s. The lake is clear and stable but the high temperatures have forced much of the fishing into the low-light periods and at night. The topwater action while the water is slick in the hour just after dawn is starting to improve. Bass: Reported in summer patterns. Many anglers are fishing this lake at night using Texas rigged worms and jigs dressed with swim minnows. Trout: while the trout fishing has slowed, Greenbo will get a stocking of trout in October. Watch our report for the day and time. Catfish: Good this week fishing very early and after dark. Fish live bait, chubs, small bluegill and cut bait. Bluegill: We got a few reports of bluegill success fishing crickets, mill-worms and live nightcrawlers.
Ohio River: The Ohio River continues to be in a state of flash flooding creeks, which continues to render the fishing unstable. Largemouth Bass: Small spinnerbaits continue to be the most productive fishing points and structure around discharge areas. Below the Dam: Twin tail grubs on ¼ oz. ball jigs are still the best producers of Sauger and Walleye. Use slow bump the bottom retrieves. We also got reports that running a two jig setup has been producing better strikes. One of the two baits needs to be a little off the bottom. White Bass: Slow with few reported catches. Bass: We are looking for some new reports on the bass fishing above the dam if you get on the water help us out! Catfish: The catfish have been active this week with reports of good catches in backwater areas along with feeder creeks using live bait.
Yatesville Lake: This week water temperatures rose into the low 80s. The lake is clear and in good shape with improving conditions. Bass: Not much has changed, according to the reports we have received; the morning low-light period has been the most productive. Spinnerbaits, crankbaits and jigs have produced fish. Crappie: Good and unchanged. Fish the edges of flats in channel bends and old fish attractors using 32 oz. white crappie jigs or live bait. We have seen some anglers improving their odds by fishing low-light periods and at night. Bluegill: We didn’t receive any reports on the bluegill this week. Catfish: The catfish have been active this week. We got reports of good catches on both live bait and small spinnerbaits fishing coves with standing timber along with flats using live bait and fishing just off the bottom.
