Kentucky Outdoor Press Association holds annual conference in Morehead

MOREHEAD Every year, the Kentucky Outdoor Press Association comes together in Morehead for an annual conference to help meet its goals of serving the outdoor community. During this time, writers from three states discuss ways in which to better communicate how the public can take advantage of the outdoor recreation opportunities waiting for them in the Bluegrass State.

While regular media covers the daily news, the outdoor press is dedicated to delivering all the news related to the outdoors. Morehead Tourism has seen the value of the outdoor press, and we have discovered just how much the area has to offer anyone wanting to experience the outdoors. They also have a beautiful Convention Center that any group would be pleased to use.  We sampled top-notch cuisine while in surroundings second to none, and enjoyed the talent of local musicians.

We stayed in the cabins of Cave Run Lodging just minutes from the water. The cabins were clean comfortable with the feeling of a time gone by, surrounded with the knotty pine walls and ceilings our stay was a joy.

Speaking of joy, I wanted to take a minute to thank Joy Brown, Tina Holbrook, Jennet’s Catering and Lundy’s Catering. They all went out of their way to make our stay one we all will remember. If you ever want to put on an event in the Morehead area, I would suggest contacting the fine folks at Morehead Tourism. I’m sure they can connect you with the people to make your event a success.

KOPA elects its officers this time of year, and for the seventh year, I am honored to hold the position of secretary. Tom Clay was re-elected as president and we voted to upgrade the status of Judy Tipton.

Tipton is a professional angler and owner of NewPro Products. Her marketing and communication skills have elevated her from a corporate sponsor to full membership status. Her work on the V-T2 Livewell air induction system has improved the mortality rate for keeping fish alive. It is especially effective during the hot months of summer when oxygen levels and warm water really can take a toll on fish held in livewells.

KOPA and Buck Knives also honored one of the greatest lure makers of all time. I’m talking about Art Schultise. He is the owner and hands-on lure maker of the AC Shiner lure company.  With only four people helping him, he turns out 97,000 lures a year. The popularity of the AC Shiner line of lures is well-known to anyone who loves fishing. At 86, Schultise is still active in both fishing and making lures.

DEER SEASON

We are deep into the gun season for deer; most of the counties in our area fall into zone two. Dates for that zone are Nov. 9-24. Zone three and four dates are Nov. 9-18. Please check your 2013 Kentucky Hunting and Trapping Guide for all the rules you need to know.

Did you get that big deer?  Send us, your pictures and a short summary of your hunt. We may use your story and pictures in future articles. Until next time, keep a tight line and good fishing.
